Ever looked into the mirror one morning and wondered why your neck wrinkles are starting to look more prominent than you remember? You’re not alone. Ever since technology became an ubiquitous part of our lives, we spend prolonged periods of time craning our necks over our phones, tablets or laptops. Constantly looking down at your mobile device all day long places a lot of pressure on your cervical spine; causing postural issues, migraines, neck and shoulder aches. It also leads to neck and chest wrinkles—or text neck wrinkles—forming prematurely and deepening over time. Below, we discuss some solutions (aesthetic and lifestyle changes) to combat text neck wrinkles.

1)   Set a Time Limit for Mobile Usage

Try not to use your phone so often. Easier said than done, considering how attached we are to our smartphones. While this might be a tip that makes you go “duh”, don’t underestimate the impact that this will make on your neck wrinkles. If you’re in a job that requires constant phone usage, make it a habit to hold your phone at eye-level when you’re using it. That way, you’ll reduce the chances of any neck wrinkles forming.

2)   Take Your Skincare Down to Your Neck

Don’t forget your neck when you’re applying your skincare! First up, make sure you’re exfoliating at least once a week. Consistent exfoliation with either a physical or chemical exfoliant will help remove surface dead skin cells from your neck, giving the appearance of smoother, more even-toned skin. Post-exfoliation, your skin will also be ready to better absorb any skincare you apply. Gently pat in a serum that’s packed with hyaluronic acid and ceramides to help draw moisture to your skin and keep it plump and firm.

 3)  Perform Neck Exercises

As you age, the muscles in your neck start to get lax. Just like how you would work out regularly to keep the rest of your body firm and toned, consider trying face yoga to keep your facial and neck muscles taut. Here’s a great exercise you can do once or twice daily that can improve the appearance of tech neck wrinkles. Sit up straight and draw your shoulders away from your ears keeping them down and relaxed. Start to lift your chin and look up to the ceiling until you feel a stretch in the upper neck and chin area. Stay in this pose while you alternate pouting your lips and sticking out your tongue for five seconds each. Repeat thrice. You want to feel tautness in your neck throughout the exercise, and you should feel like you’re exerting enough effort for your neck muscles to feel fatigued after.

4)   Explore Aesthetic Treatments

Aside from these lifestyle changes, there are aesthetic treatments that can help reduce the appearance of visible neck wrinkles. One of the possible treatments you can consider is Micro-Focused Ultrasound with Visualisation (MFU-V). The skin on our neck is generally thinner than other parts of our body, making it more prone to visible signs of ageing. During the treatment, micro-focused ultrasound energy is delivered to target tissues such as the dermis and fibromuscular layer (e.g. platysma), which helps kickstart the body’s natural collagen production process. Over time, this helps lift and tighten saggy skin under the chin and on the neck—giving your skin a smoother, more lifted look and reducing the appearance of neck wrinkles.
